Taking Five with Tania McCartney

Taking Five

Tania McCartney is running a workshop Publishing a Picture Book this Saturday 22 November designed for those seeking to both create and produce children’s picture books. It would also suit those keen to learn more about both the trade publishing and self-publishing markets, their constructs and the skillsets required.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your creative loves/endeavours.

I’m an author, illustrator, editor who’s completely picture book obsessed. It’s a real problem. I write them, collect them, use them as wall art, smell them, eat them (well, almost). I’ve even started illustrating them (a lifelong dream). This came about after starting my 52-Week Illustration Challenge in January of this year, which reconnected me with art after a 25+ year hiatus. It’s changed my world in so many ways—I can’t even say. And one outcome has been a re-ignited confidence with illustration. I write in other genres, too, and have too many fingers in too many pies, too many days of the year (though I’m not complaining). Oh, and I also run Kids’ Book Review.

2. What is it about writing for children that you love?

That my books might in some way educate, enhance, enchant, emote or enthral them. It’s all about the kids. Lucky I’m still a kid so it’s all about me, too (in a Doing What I Love sense).

3. What do you find the hardest part about writing?

Not having enough hours in the day to do as much as I’d like to. It’s monumentally frustrating that one must eat and wash their hair.

4. If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring picture book writer, what would it be?

Read. A lot. And never, ever give up.

5. You’re holding an upcoming workshop this Saturday November 22, Publishing a Picture Book, what can participants expect to take away from the workshop?

To be transported to another world! The picture book world is so divine, so all-encompassing and each participant will learn how to immerse themselves fully. I’m going to share all I know about picture books, and we’ll have a lot of fun along the way. Only other picture book aficionados can possibly understand what I mean by the picture book heart-thump. I’m expecting a lot of heart-thumping on Saturday.
